About the Department

The Department of Information Engineering (DII) at the University of Pisa is an International Center of Excellence for Research and Higher Education in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Robotics. It hosts 120 faculty members and about 50 postdoc research associates. Its main research areas include electronics and applied electromagnetics, communications systems, computer science and engineering, robotics and automation, and biomedical engineering.

DII is currently involved in about 20 research projects funded by the European Commission (49 in the last three years), 3 projects funded through ERC Grants, and 25 research projects funded by the regional government of Tuscany. It runs an intense activity in Higher Education for about 4000 (undergraduate and graduate) students and about 200 PhD students.
DII has promoted 6 spin-off projects and has published 186 patents. It cooperates with private and public institutions to provide innovative solutions to key issues in different ICT sectors, and to bridge the gap between academic and industrial research.
DII has a long-standing tradition of research excellence. In 2023 DII was selected as “Department of Excellence” by the Italian Ministry for Education and Research (MUR) with the FoReLab project, aiming at researching fundamental technologies for a new generation of human-centric, resilient and sustainable industry. DII also won the same competition in 2018, with the CrossLab project, aiming at structuring innovative labs for Industry 4.0.
